Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 2012 has many garments with beautiful lace details. You don't have to be an expert to knit one up in time to wear this summer.
Three of these designs—#3 Cardi Wrap, #14 Drop Stitch Scarf and #21 Lace Inset Tank—are ideal for knitters who are new to lace and might not be ready to work shaping on a lace pattern. All three are worked from charts, over a single panel of lace or over a lace repeat.
Lace knitting can look intimidating, but it is just a combination of all the stitches we normally use, such as yo for increases; decreases such as k2tog, ssk, skp; and the double decreases k3tog, SK2P and S2KP. In order to work even in lace, all of the yos must be balanced by decreases, keeping the stitch count constant on every row. Sometimes the paired yos and decs are worked side by side; other times they are separated by plain knitting. In these three patterns, the lace is worked only on the right side of the knitting.
It’s a good idea to work a practice swatch with scrap yarn. This will help you become familiar with the lace pattern before you cast on. Be sure to count stitches at the end of every row to confirm that all yos and decs have been worked. You should work the row repeat more than once to see how the pattern lines up. Because these practice swatches are worked with scrap yarn, they should not be used for gauge. Once you are comfortable with the lace pattern, work up a gauge swatch with the project yarn.
Pattern
#3 combines an eye-catching lace centerpiece with a simpler
ridge-patterned body. The collar is worked over a repeated lace motif,
as are the centers of the sleeves. The underarm increases are worked in
easy stockinette stitch.
To practice, cast on 35 stitches. This gives you enough stitches to work the chart, plus 2 garter stitches on each side. While working row 1, place markers between the 10-st repeats, making it easier to keep your place while following the chart. Slip the markers every row.
Row 1 (RS) K2, work the chart from right to left to the repeat line, work the 10-st repeat twice, work the sts after the repeat line, end with k2.
Row 2 (WS) K2, work the chart from left to right to the repeat line, work the 10-st repeat twice, work the sts after the repeat line, end with k2.
Work one full 14-row chart repeat, then work at least the first ten rows once again. Bind off if desired.
There
are two lace details in #14 Drop Stitch Scarf: the lace leaf motif and
the dropped sts. The lace leaf motifs are worked from the chart; the
stitches that are dropped just before binding off will add to the airy
look.
For a swatch, you can work the entire chart, or just one of the leaf panels. To work the chart, just cast on 55 stitches and work the 16-row repeat once, then work at least the first ten rows once more. Before binding off, drop the stitches as noted in the pattern.
To practice over just one leaf panel, cast on 19 stitches.
Row 1 (RS) Beg with the first st, work the chart from right to left, end with the 19th st.
Row 2 (WS) Beg with the 19th st, work the chart from left to right, end with the first st. Complete as described above.
The
single lace panel on the front of #21 Lace Inset Tank stands out amid a
bed of stockinette stitch. The panel is worked up to the beginning of
the neck shaping; the chart stitches are then placed on a holder for the
collar. The smallest size places all but 2 of the chart stitches onto a
holder. These 2 stitches are then bound off immediately. The graceful
side shaping, as well as the armhole and remaining neck shaping, are
worked in stockinette stitch.
To work a swatch, cast on a total of 33 stitches for the 29-st chart, plus 2 garter stitches on each side
